Welcome.
Black History Month serves as a reminder of the struggles and triumphs of the African American & Black communities throughout history. An opportunity to celebrate the achievements and to recognize the contributions, courage, and resilience, African American & Black communities have made to our society.
A time to reflect on the past and present and look to the future.
During Black History Month, together let’s highlight the importance of black history and culture and use it as a reminder of the need for continued progress in the fight for equity, inclusion, and justice for all.
Some Facts about Black History Month
Before it was Black History Month, “Negro History Week” was created by Carter G. Woodson, an African American historian, scholar, educator, and publisher. He is considered the “Father of Black History.”
Originally created to encourage coordinated teachings of Black history in America’s public schools, it took time to gain momentum and to become a vehicle for racial transformation.
President Gerald Ford was the first to officially recognize Black History Month, in 1976.
